Raw Research Data Poa Annua Reduction Spreadsheet

We have been very excited about how the GenNext products designed to grow stronger denser, turf grass have performed in research plots. I have finally figured out google docs so you can link these documents to post. The link below will take you to the raw data from a MIchigan State Study done this past season.

As we have stated in the past our efforts to reduce poa annua have focused on energizing the primary turfgrass to grow through the poa annua. Overall last season in the MSU study the poa annua cover was reduced from 33.61% to 13.33% using the A&B Complete product. The numbers in the research show a moderate declines during the summer months while keeping both bent and poa annua injury to a minimum at the peak playing season. The key statistic to us is the significant reduction in poa annua from September to October which is traditionally a time when poa annua has a "fall bounce back". Click Here for the document

Strong Dense Turf Grasses by GenNext

Lots of calls and emails this month after the mention in Superintendent Magazine. Thought this would be a good opportunity to walk through why the products reduce the use of fungicides, pesticides, herbicides while lowering water usage and on top of all that reduce poa annua significantly.” 

GenNext has a series of products,  developed over 40 years of constant research, that grows better turf grass. Our products are based on the belief that microorganisms are the key to building dense strong turf grass. GenNext products are not live microbes. GenNext has taken the essential microorganisms through the necessary life cycles to provide products that promote and provide strong dominant turf grass growth. We do this by extracting, in our labs, specific hormones, enzymes and organic complexes produced by these microbes adding additional micro nutrients, N and K as needed.

Let me state again, microorganisms are the key to building dense strong turf grass. Such organisms are responsible for releasing ingredients that solubilize various minerals and organic substances for root uptake. These microbes are responsible for releasing substances that are taken up by the plants that encourage aggressive root and rhizome growth that build cells, cell walls, healing, better withstanding adversities and assisting in developing/building immunity and defense systems. Besides the plant improvement, these organisms are also responsible for the development of rich, productive soil, the breakdown and release of toxic substances and the buildup of organic matter other essentials for improving soil aggregates, penetration and productivity.

The microbes associated with healthy turf grass growth have the ability to release materials that are toxic to many pathogenic disease organisms, insects and weeds. These represent nature’s natural defense. If they were encouraged to grow effectively they automatically control, prevent and kill these pests reducing the need for herbicides, fungicides and pesticide applications.When these soil microbes are deficient or non-existent, the grass weakens, thins out and eventually dies, other plants begin to invade quickly as they do not require these same microbes for their existence. Because of the large number of negative conditions that exist in a typical golf course soil these microorganisms cannot exist and/or function in the number required for healthy turf grass growth.  They cannot be added to the soil because of the toxic and negative soil conditions present would kill live microbes as they are applied.

”This green has always been one of the poorest performing greens on the property.  Given the small size, drainage problems, shade issues, and the extreme heat of the past two summers, it has been difficult to maintain turf on this area.  We have been making applications ... every 2-3 weeks since June, and will make a final application next week at a 2x rate (per your suggestion) prior to the turf turning dormant… , this is the best this green has looked or putted in a long time”

Sandstone Golf Update: Great turf less Poa Annua

In May of this year we had the opportunity to meet with Dean Rollie at Sandstone Golf. Like many courses in Minnesota this spring Sandstone had a large amount of winter kill on their greens.  In our initial meeting with Dean and his General Manager there was some serious disbelief that our organic based  products would not only revive the damaged areas,  but over the course of the summer, significantly improve the overall  conditions of the greens  including reducing the Poa Annua population.  After some arm twisting and the promise of a free hat, Dean started using the GenNext Complete A&B products on his greens in late May, applying every two weeks at an 8 oz. per 1000 sq. ft. rate.

Dean in an earlier blog (http://sandstonegolf.blogspot.com/2011/05/new-product-trial-but-no-free-hat.html ) had commented: ” As far as promoting the bentgrass over poa, time will tell. It's only been applied twice, so we'll see as the summer goes on what effect it will have. Our number 1 green will be the ultimate test… This green is almost pure poa. If Gen Next Complete can make a dent in this one, I'll be the first in line to buy it.” 

Well the season is over.  Below are the before and after pictures of the number 1 green, Dean estimates that the poa annua population has been reduced by 60%. From almost all poa annua to a green that is 65% bentgrass in one season, using GenNext Complete A&B.

Deer Run Project

We sprayed the 11th fairway at Deer Run in Victoria MN on 8/10/2011 with GenNext Complete A&B and Like Wild here are the pictures detailing the results.
