Aerification Results

It’s that time of year, when scheduled aerification is being done across the country. Superintendents are constantly questioned with "just when the greens were perfect you start punching holes in them?"

One of the great things that happens with courses using our products is that time between the disruptions of the turf when playable is reduced. The products are designed to create aggressive lateral growth. This creates denser turf stands looking for more space to grow laterally. Here is two pictures taken five days apart at Wisconsin course.  These were sent to us with the comment from the Superintendent "Pretty Amazing!!!

If your greens aren’t performing this well take look at our C&D program. Just apply the products three times with your current program and compare side by side the difference will make you a believer.

Fast & Firm

It’s been to long since we had a blog post but this summer has been very busy for the GenNext team. Colorado Golf Club hosted the Solheim Cup this last week and we could not have been prouder of the green conditions created by Tony Hartsock and his team. Hopefully some of benefits were from using the GenNext Complete A&B products.

During the entire broadcast and in the press the talk was how fast, firm and undulating the greens were, more importantly never once during the event did the greens lose color or plant health. The GenNext products are designed to provide optimum plant health that deliver fast firm conditions with less stress on the plant than any other product in the market today.

Some of the great quotes on the greens:
European captain Liselotte Neumann said many of her players headed back onto the greens after their practice rounds earlier in the week to soak in the subtleties of the greens.
"We did talk a lot about the speed," she said. "As soon as we got here, we realized they were super-fast, some of the fastest we've ever played. It was a matter of reading the greens, reading the speed into the putts." ABC NEWS

The USA, on the other hand, could never get a handle on the undulated, firm and slick greens throughout the tournament and now has lost their grip on the Solheim Cup. USA Today

Another great feature during the broadcast was the GCSAA sponsored ad that stated that the greens were the quickest the LPGA had faced this year and that some adjustments had to be made to make the greens less firm for Sunday’s matches. What superintendent wouldn’t like to hear the greens are too fast and firm?

We can’t thank enough the Golf Enviro Systems, Inc. team, our distributor in that region and Tony Hartsock Superintendent at Colorado Golf Club and his team for helping showcase how our products perform.

Graff's Turf Farm Field Days Day 1

This year we partnered with Golf Enviro Systems from Colorado Springs CO to participate in the Graff's Turf Farm Field Days event being held this week. Spring in Colorado this year was slow to come and the growing conditions have not been ideal.

The plot for this trial was T1 Bent grass, with the time constraints of a late spring, only three applications of the GenNext A&B were applied, the photos below show some of the results.

The coloration difference is very apparent in this picture.

Root depths are clearly more impressive, this is again after only three applications of the products.

This is a picture from ground level after the being mowed at 1.4, the Jacobson people were performing a green mower demonstration. The discussion turned from the mower to the difference in turf density, after reviewing the control and GenNext plots through the glass height prism gauge. The GenNext products are designed to grow strong dense turfgrasses, in doing so the "crowding" together of the denser turf grass makes the blades of the plants stand up straighter, creating a significantly smoother putting surface.

The Field Days continue through May 16th, we hope to gather additional photos to illustrate some other important features of the products.

FROM THE STONE HARBOR GOLF COURSE MAINTENANCE BLOG

HERE ARE SOME OBSERVATIONS STONE HARBOR GCM BLOG A NEW USER OF THE PRODUCT THIS YEAR: HIGHLIGHTED IN BOLD ARE SOME INTERESTING COMMENTS.

WE WILL BE AT STONE HARBOR ON THURSDAY THSI WEEK FOR "THE WAR ON THE SHORE" JOINT GCSAA EVENT.

GenNext Observations

Looking at some of the greens a little more closely this morning where we have applied GenNext Complete A & B, I have made a few observations.

So far the "GenNext greens" have had a total of .8# N/m applied to them and the check plots are at .3# N/m. This is much more nitrogen then we are use to applying at this point in the growing season. We are typically around .3#-.5# N/m at this point. With that said, we have noticed the greens where we have had a moss infestation, such as holes #2, #3, the moss in the check plot areas seems to have a green color and only has a few bentgrass/poa plants emerging through the moss. Where as the rest of the green surface where the GenNext has been applied is showing more bentgrass plants especially emerging through the moss. The moss also seems to be "suppressed" and not as active as the check plots. This can be attributed to the increased level of nitrogen that the greens have received that we tend not to apply at this point.

The second observation is the rooting depth in both the check plot areas and GenNext applied areas appear to be the same at about a 3-4" depth.

The third observation made is the clipping yield from the "GenNext greens" to the "non-GenNext greens" is approximately the same. The "non-GenNext" greens have a total of .675# N/m applied to them of ammonium sulfate. With .8# N/m applied in one month you would expect a dark green color on the greens which we have seen. However the growth seems to be more lateral then upright which is desired to help encourage more bentgrass into the putting surface.

Our last observation made is with the warmer temperatures we have had we have had poa annua seed heads emerge on the putting surfaces. Even though we made a seed head suppression application 3 weeks ago, our timing has seemed to be off, which is disappointing. However, the "GenNext greens" have significantly less seed heads then the "non-GenNext" greens. The only difference in applications besides amount of nitrogen is the applications of GenNext Complete A & B.

To also note the soil temperatures in the greens as of today is 60 degrees at a 2" depth and 58 degrees at a 4" depth.

THE MEMO THAT CAUGHT OUR ATTENTION!

Years ago a group gave a presentation to a number of investors in a Nashville Airport conference room.  Below is the details we received after we inquired about what they were doing in turf. As part of our business planning process we brought the document out again. This time we decided to share it with others.

INTRODUCTION “THE BASES FOR THE PRODUCTS”

Beautiful turf that is easy and inexpensive to maintain have always been the desire of professional turf manager’s and homeowners ever since turfgrasses have been used to cover the soil. Today, lawns, sport turf and golf courses have become one of the most important factors reflecting prestige, value, quality, environmental concern, as well as beauty.  Most everyone realizes that "First Impressions are Lasting Impressions".  The first visual contact one makes with any building or site is its outdoor setting; including the landscaping, building and turf areas it is that first visually retained image that is so important.  It is this image that will be associated with a specific company, governmental agency, golf course, building site, home, etc.

People love and appreciate beautiful turf and landscapes. They expect dense, deep-green turf at the establishments they do their business.  This is the chief reason advertising agencies always place beautiful lawns and landscapes on the outside cover of their ad materials.

Turf Managers also realize that beautiful turf not only adds beauty and warmth to their properties, but also significantly increases its value. Professional turf managers’ attempts to obtain this desired "beautiful first impression turf" often become expensive and frustrating investments in time and money. To add insult to injury, these attempts require a continuing increase in time, energy, and expenses. Yet, the agonizing poor results keep showing up despite these repeated efforts one would expect that the turf should become stronger, denser, and less expensive to manage, and gain in beauty as they become more mature.  This is a very logical conclusion for anyone to reach; but, in reality, it most often does not happen.

One would also expect that the more expensive the products used on turf, the higher the application rates, and the more frequently they are applied, the better the results, the more the turf is "babied", the stronger, healthier and more beautiful turf.  Again, the complete opposite usually results:  The more products and care provided, the weaker the turf and the more susceptible it becomes to insects, diseases, adverse weather conditions, wear and tear: Eventually the turf loses its natural ability to fight off such adversaries and heal from the damage; the results never seem to justify the efforts or expense.

What’s different about our approach? The answer is Nature!

Some Thoughts before San Diego

We have said this all before and now we are saying it again! We firmly believe the GenNext Products are a significant breakthrough in  how all turfgrass and agricultural products will be grown and cultivated moving forward.
January under the cover north of Denver CO

The picture to the left here is a prime example of the incredible performance GenNext provides to Superintendents. I challenge anyone to pick up their covers and send me a better looking example of turf health in January for a northern region course.

The GenNext products are designed to provide immediate improvement in turf health while allowing the plants to build up a long term defense to avoid disease and weed invasion (poa annua). The product is the result of 40 years of research into what separates healthy vibrant turf from vulnerable turf. The answer lies in the soil and the plants ability to process the nutrients it needs to grow strong, dense disease resistant plants. GenNext is organic based with no manure, no animal byproducts but rather microbe byproducts produced in a lab under ideal conditions then added to a proprietary blend of water soluble carbon finally macro and micro nutrients added to complete the formulation. The results are outstanding!

I've spoken with Superintendents over the past five years who are using off the label application rates with PGR’s, fungicides and herbicides based on the idea that they have to get ahead of the problem. Rather than look what’s causing the problem, they continue programs that further stress the turf. This then leads to more turf problems and the circle continues. GenNext products really are part of the solution!

So my journey to GIS Show begins tomorrow with a quick trip to Chicago to discuss ongoing research projects for Coffee Blight, Rain Forest rebirth and the amazing results we are seeing in test with cauliflower grown in California. From there its off to the Philadelphia area to meet with a potential new distributor then late Friday night off to California.

If you're going to the GIS show call me I will make time to sit down with you and explain in depth the products and how it will benefit your turfgrass (Bermuda, Zyosia, Bent, Fine Fescue ...)

Increasing Bent Grass Populations

End of the season for 60% of the United States and we have pictures and testimonials from superintendents across the country coming in. We wanted to share some pictures that were forwarded on to us showing the increase in bent populations on a course in Colorado.

The pictures below are the before and after of using the GenNext products all season. The first picture is the actual picture, the second is a picture using a special filter to show turf voids and poa annua plants. The picture is from April 2012, the dark spots are the poa annua and the light spots are turf voids.

This second set of pictures is from October 2012, as you can see the Bent population has increased and no turf voids. This Superintendent told us he had no turf voids after initial applications of GenNext.
